State of California Recycling Fee

Beginning back on January 1, 2005, the Electronics Waste Recycling Act began requiring all companies to collect a fee on certain purchases from California customers.

Devices currently affected are all products that contain cathode ray tubes (CRTs) or liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with a diagonal screen size greater than 4 inches, such as monitors and notebook computers. The fees break down as follows:

· $6 per device with a diagonal screen size greater than 4 inches but less than 15 inches

· $8 per device with a diagonal screen size equal to or greater than 15 inches, but less than 35 inches

· $10 per device with a diagonal screen size of 35 inches or larger

The legislation is designed to cover the increasing cost of recycling these devices. The new law applies to all companies selling to California customers, and CDWG began collecting this new fee back on the effective date, January 1, 2005.
